A Beeping Sound At 3 AM

This morning I woke up at 3 am to an incessant beeping sound.

At first I thought it was our security system. I checked on that. Nope. All was safe and sound.

But the noise, it just wouldn’t stop. And it was getting louder. So I got out of bed and I started searching for it.

My investigation led me downstairs to a kitchen drawer. My fears were confirmed! It was a cooking timer. Somehow this alarm got set for some unknown period of time, and when we tossed it in a crowded drawer, the start button was inadvertently pressed, and the countdown to 3 am began.

Normally cooking alarms are set for a functional purpose. They exist so we can avoid overcooking our food and burning everything to a crisp. Nothing like that happened today!

Ultimately my alarm went off for nothing.

Life Lesson

I wonder how many of us have alarms going off in our lives for no reason.

What we are afraid of happening never actually materializes, but somewhere a beeping sound is going off at 3 am that robs us of our sleep and our joy.

God never meant for us to carry such burdens and live in such a way.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NASB)

Many of you probably know these verses well, so there isn’t any need of me to provide any exposition on them. You have probably heard it preached on many times over the years.

Today, I just wanted to provide all you who know such things a simple reminder. A reminder I believe is necessary because even though what Jesus taught here is simple to understand, it can be a difficult thing to actually practice.

Whatever your fears and burdens are, don’t try to carry them alone. Surrender those things to the Lord, and find rest for your weary soul. We can trust the Lord with all our hopes and fears.

We don’t need to be robbed of sleep at 3 am by false alarms.
